"Storms Never Last," Bronze Bust of Waylon Jennings by artist James Branscum

"Storms Never Last," Bronze Bust of Waylon Jennings by artist James Branscum

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 485)

27 ½" x 20" (add’l 3 ½" for the brim of the hat) Cast in solid bronze and molded from clay, James Branscum’s original drawing of this iconic image of Waylon Jennings was initially known as “Image of the Man." The bust was appropriately titled “Storms Never Last" after a song of the same name written by the love of Waylon’s life, country songstress Jessi Colter. First displayed on October 4, 1989 during a special unveiling at Jessi and Waylon’s Brentwood, TN home, ten days later the bust was revealed to the public in Phoenix, AZ as Waylon was honored at the Heard Museum for his contributions to mankind through music. This first sculpture is still owned by Jessi Colter, but in memory of Waylon and for this Auction, four authorized castings have been made. Each of these castings will be individually numbered. This bronze is number two of five. James Branscum is an award-winning American artist and sculptor, often acknowledged as the first non-Native American artist to exhibit major Native American-inspired pieces in the marketplace. Born in Oklahoma in 1945, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1964 and dedicated his life to art in 1977. Branscum found success marketing his own work, that of which has been featured in numerous exhibitions and magazines across the United States. For years he ran the Jim Branscum Arts Studio at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts, which also included a gallery. Branscum closed the studio in the mid-1990s as he trekked across the country for his “Aging in America" project: a landmark series of drawings that captured a cross-section of America’s elderly from many racial and ethnic backgrounds. In addition to large-scale endeavors like “Aging in America," Branscum was often commissioned to sculpt pieces like a Korean War Memorial located in Phoenix.
